Senator Sunday Marshall Katung is a Nigerian lawyer, politician, and public administrator who represents Kaduna South Senatorial District in the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and has served in the Senate since June 2023.
Senator Katung was born on 1 April 1961 in Madakiya, in the present-day Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State. He received his early education in Kaduna State before proceeding to Kufena College, Wusasa, Zaria, and later the College of Arts and Science, Zaria. He studied Law at the University of Lagos and subsequently attended the Nigerian Law School, where he was called to the Nigerian Bar. He also obtained management qualifications from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
Before entering politics, Katung developed a professional career in law and corporate administration. He served as Company Secretary and Legal Adviser of the Nigeria Reinsurance Corporation, where he gained considerable experience in corporate law, legal administration, governance, and management.
His involvement in government began in Kaduna State, where he served as Commissioner for Water Resources and later Commissioner for Finance. These appointments provided him with experience in public administration, financial management, infrastructure, and government policy.
In the 2015 general elections, Katung was elected to the House of Representatives, representing Jaba/Zangon Kataf Federal Constituency under the platform of the PDP. During his time in the House, he participated in legislative activities and worked on issues concerning the development and welfare of his constituents.
In 2018, he emerged as the PDP deputy governorship candidate in Kaduna State, serving as the running mate to the party's governorship candidate. Although the ticket did not win the election, the experience further strengthened his involvement in Kaduna State politics.
In the 2023 general elections, Sunday Marshall Katung contested for the Kaduna South Senatorial District seat under the PDP and was elected to the 10th National Assembly. His senatorial district covers eight local government areas: Jaba, Jema'a, Kachia, Kagarko, Kaura, Kauru, Sanga, and Zangon Kataf.
As a senator, Katung has been involved in legislation, oversight, constituency development, education, healthcare, infrastructure, environmental protection, and human-capital development. He has also advocated for initiatives designed to improve the socio-economic conditions of communities across Southern Kaduna.
A significant aspect of his constituency representation has been his support for education and human-capital development, including efforts connected with the development of higher-education opportunities in Southern Kaduna. His constituency activities have also included empowerment programmes, healthcare interventions, infrastructure projects, and support for young people.
In 2026, Senator Katung declared his intention to seek re-election to the Senate in the 2027 general elections, citing his desire to continue ongoing development initiatives and provide further representation for the people of Kaduna South.
Beyond his legislative responsibilities, Senator Sunday Marshall Katung is known for his background in law, corporate administration, government, and grassroots politics. His career has taken him from the legal profession to corporate leadership, Kaduna State government, the House of Representatives, and ultimately the Senate.
Through his experience in law, public administration, legislative service, and community development, Senator Sunday Marshall Katung has established himself as a prominent political figure in Kaduna State.
