Biography of Hon. Sekav Dzua Iyortyom

Hon. Sekav Dzua Iyortyom is a Nigerian politician, educationist, businessman and legislator from Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State. He was born on 5 November 1964 and has built a career spanning education, private enterprise and public service.

Iyortyom began his education at Demonstration Primary School, Mkar, before attending Government Teachers’ College, Mkar, where he obtained his secondary education. He later studied at the Institute of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and furthered his education at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi. He holds a Master’s degree.

He began his professional career as a teacher, serving at N.K.S.T. Secondary School, Mkar, and later at N.K.S.T. Bristow Secondary School, Gboko. He subsequently moved into the private sector and became President and Chief Executive Officer of SEDI Capital Projects Ltd. He also served as Executive Director of Vekas and Allets Investment.

His political career has included involvement with both the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress. He served as Assistant Legal Adviser of the PDP in Benue State between 2007 and 2010 and later became involved in the APC in Benue. He also served as Deputy Director of Operations of the Samuel Ortom Campaign Organisation during the 2015 political campaign period.

Before entering the National Assembly, Iyortyom served as Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism in Benue State. In the 2023 general election, he was elected to the House of Representatives to represent the Buruku Federal Constituency of Benue State on the platform of the APC.

As a member of the 10th National Assembly, Iyortyom has raised issues concerning the development and welfare of communities in his constituency and Benue State. In 2024, he sponsored a motion calling for the dredging of the River Benue as a measure to address recurring flooding, protect agricultural communities and improve the economic use of the river.

Beyond politics, Iyortyom has been involved in community and professional organisations and has received recognition for his contributions to education, community development and public service. His career reflects experience in teaching, business, state-level administration and federal legislative representation.
