Biography of Hon. Okon Ime Bassey

Hon. Okon Ime Bassey is a Nigerian lawyer and politician from Akwa Ibom State. Born on 16 August 1962, he holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree and has built his career through legal practice, grassroots politics and legislative service.

Bassey began his legislative career in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, where he represented Ibiono Ibom State Constituency from 2011 to 2019. During his time in the state legislature, he served as Deputy House Leader and Chairman of the House Committee on Information, giving him considerable experience in legislative leadership and public communication.

In the 2023 general election, Bassey was elected to the House of Representatives to represent the Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State. He became a member of the 10th National Assembly, where he has participated in legislative activities and constituency development initiatives.

At the National Assembly, he has served as Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Inter-Governmental Affairs. His legislative interests have included infrastructure, community development and issues affecting the welfare of his constituents.

Bassey has also been involved in constituency projects and interventions aimed at improving the lives of residents of Itu and Ibiono Ibom. His activities have included support for infrastructure, education, empowerment and other community-focused initiatives.

Politically, Bassey was initially elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In July 2025, he defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside other Akwa Ibom lawmakers.

For the 2027 general election, the final list published by the Independent National Electoral Commission identifies Okon Ime Bassey as the APC candidate for the Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency. His political career therefore continues to combine his legal background, legislative experience and grassroots engagement in Akwa Ibom State.
