Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat is a Nigerian engineer, technocrat, and politician who has played a significant role in the development and governance of Lagos State. Born on September 19, 1964, in Lagos, Nigeria, he is widely recognized for his contributions to public administration, infrastructure development, and technology-driven governance.
Dr. Hamzat was born into the family of the late Oba Mufutau Olatunji Hamzat and Alhaja Kehinde Hamzat. He attended Odu-Abore Memorial Primary School in Mushin, Lagos, and later completed his secondary education at Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo State. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Ibadan in 1986 and a Master's degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1988. He later earned a Ph.D. in Process Systems Engineering from Cranfield University in 1992.
Before entering public service, Dr. Hamzat built a successful career in academia, information technology, engineering, and finance. He worked with notable organizations including RTP Consulting Services, Columbia University, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, and Oando Plc, where he served as Chief Information Officer and Group Head of IT Strategy.
Dr. Hamzat joined public service in 2005 when he was appointed Commissioner for Science and Technology in Lagos State by then-Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu. During his tenure, he introduced technology-driven reforms that modernized government operations and improved public sector efficiency. He later served as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure under Governor Babatunde Fashola, overseeing major infrastructure projects across Lagos.
In 2019, Dr. Hamzat was elected Deputy Governor of Lagos State alongside Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and was re-elected in 2023. His administration has focused on infrastructure development, education, technology, transportation, and economic growth.
Known for his analytical approach and commitment to innovation, Dr. Hamzat has been instrumental in advancing digital governance and modernizing public service delivery in Lagos State. He is respected for combining technical expertise with public sector leadership, making him one of Nigeria's most prominent technocrats and political leaders.
Dr. Hamzat is married to Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, and they are blessed with children. He is known for his dedication to public service, education, and youth empowerment
