Biography of Malam Ibrahim Shekarau

Malam Ibrahim Shekarau is a Nigerian politician, educationist, administrator, and former governor of Kano State. He served as the Governor of Kano State from 2003 to 2011, completing two consecutive terms in office. He later served as a Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District and as the Minister of Education of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Ibrahim Shekarau was born on 5 November 1955 in Kano State, Nigeria. He received his early education in Kano before proceeding to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he studied Mathematics. His academic background and professional training prepared him for a career in education and public administration.

Before entering politics, Shekarau spent many years working in the education sector. He began his career as a teacher and eventually rose through the ranks of the education service. He served as a classroom teacher, school principal, education administrator, and senior education official. His long experience in education gave him considerable knowledge of the challenges facing schools, teachers, and students in northern Nigeria.

Shekarau's transition into politics followed his growing involvement in public affairs and community leadership. He defeated the incumbent governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and assumed office as governor on 29 May 2003.

During his first term as governor, Shekarau focused on education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, water supply, and human-capital development. His administration placed particular emphasis on improving the education sector, reflecting his professional background as an educationist.

He was re-elected in 2007, beginning his second term as Governor of Kano State. After completing his second term as governor in 2011, Shekarau continued his political career at the federal level. In the 2015 general elections, he was elected to the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Kano Central Senatorial District. In 2015, Shekarau was appointed Minister of Education by President Muhammadu Buhari. His appointment reflected his long professional background in education and his previous experience as a state governor.
