Biography of Chief Johnbosco Onunkwo

Chief Johnbosco Obinna Onunkwo is a Nigerian engineer, businessman, philanthropist and politician from Umuchu in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. He is a prominent member and founding chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State and has been actively involved in the party's political development over the years.

Onunkwo studied at Union Primary School, Adazi-Nnukwu, before proceeding to St. Teresa's College, Nsukka. He later attended Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, where he obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electrical/Electronics and Computer Engineering. His professional career has been largely connected to the oil and gas industry, where he has worked in engineering and maintenance-related positions.

Beyond his professional career, Onunkwo has established himself as a philanthropist and community development advocate. Through the Johnbosco Onunkwo Foundation, he has supported various initiatives involving education, healthcare, agriculture, youth empowerment and assistance to vulnerable members of society. His foundation has also provided relief materials and other forms of support to communities in Anambra.

Onunkwo has been involved in politics for several years. He was among the early political figures associated with the APC in Anambra and has contested for elective positions on several occasions. He was an APC aspirant for the Anambra governorship in 2017 and 2021 and contested for the Aguata Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives in 2019 and again in the 2023 election, when he was the APC candidate.

He also founded the Coalition of Support Groups for Asiwaju/Shettima (COSGAS), a political support organisation that was active during the 2023 presidential election. Through the organisation, he participated in grassroots mobilisation and support activities for the APC presidential campaign.

In 2025, Onunkwo contested the APC governorship primary in Anambra State. Following the primary, he was appointed Chairman of the party's Post-Primary Reconciliation Committee, where he participated in efforts to strengthen unity within the party ahead of the state governorship election.

Chief Johnbosco Onunkwo has therefore combined a career in engineering and the oil and gas sector with philanthropy and extensive political involvement. His activities in Anambra State have particularly focused on grassroots mobilisation, youth empowerment, community development and strengthening the APC's presence in the state.
