About Ekong Samson (Sen.)

Senator Akpan Ekong Sampson is a Nigerian lawyer, journalist, author, and politician who represents Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly. A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he is widely recognized for his experience in legislative affairs, public administration, and grassroots governance, having served in several strategic positions at the local and state levels before his election to the Senate.

Born on September 18, 1967, in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, Senator Sampson received his early education in the state before earning a National Diploma in Mass Communication from The Polytechnic, Calabar, graduating with distinction. He later studied Law at the former University of Cross River State (now the University of Uyo) and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1991. He subsequently obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law from the University of Calabar, reflecting his commitment to academic excellence and public leadership.

Before entering elective politics, Sampson built a career in journalism, legal practice, and public affairs. He also served as a Legislative Aide to Senator Udoma Udo Udoma between 1999 and 2003, an experience that provided him with extensive knowledge of parliamentary processes and legislative administration. He is also an accomplished author, with publications on law, governance, and public policy.

His political career began at the grassroots level when he served as Executive Chairman of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. He was later elected to represent Mkpat Enin State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, where he served for two terms. During his years in state government, he also held several executive positions, including Special Adviser on Political and Legislative Affairs, Commissioner for Environment and Petroleum Resources, and Commissioner for Economic Development, contributing to policy formulation and public administration in Akwa Ibom State.

In 2023, Senator Sampson was elected to represent Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate. Since assuming office, he has played an active role in legislative activities, serving as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and as a member of several other committees, including those on Appropriation and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). His legislative agenda has focused on education, infrastructure, environmental sustainability, regional development, and improved public welfare.

As a lawmaker, Senator Sampson has sponsored and supported bills and motions aimed at expanding educational opportunities, strengthening healthcare delivery, improving transportation infrastructure, and promoting sustainable development in the Niger Delta. His advocacy for environmental protection, coastal security, and economic development reflects his longstanding commitment to addressing the unique challenges of oil-producing communities.
