Biography of Dr. Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna
Dr. Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna is a Nigerian economist, businessman, philanthropist, and politician renowned for his leadership in Nigeria's power sector and his contributions to public service and community development. Widely known by his traditional title, Sardaunan Gombe, he has built a distinguished career spanning corporate management, entrepreneurship, and politics, earning recognition as one of the leading political figures in Gombe State.
Born on 5 December 1965 in Gombe State, Nigeria, Dr. Gwamna received his early education in the state before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1986. He later obtained a Master of Science in Business Economics and Finance and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Economics from London Metropolitan University, United Kingdom, further strengthening his expertise in finance, economics, and strategic management.
Dr. Gwamna began his professional career in Nigeria's financial and industrial sectors, serving at the Nigerian Bank of Commerce and Industry and later at the Kaduna Aluminium Company, where he held senior accounting and management positions. He subsequently founded Amstrade Ventures Limited, an indigenous company specializing in heavy-duty equipment and industrial services, establishing himself as a successful entrepreneur.
In 2013, he was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), one of Nigeria's largest electricity distribution companies. During his tenure, he led significant operational reforms, expanded customer service infrastructure, promoted metering initiatives, strengthened distribution networks, and introduced technology-driven improvements aimed at enhancing electricity service delivery across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States. His leadership earned him widespread recognition within Nigeria's power sector.
Dr. Gwamna's political career began in 1999 when he served as Executive Chairman of the Gombe State Water Board. Over the years, he has contested the Gombe State governorship under different political platforms and has remained an influential figure in the state's political landscape. In 2026, he emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the 2027 Gombe State governorship election, presenting a development agenda focused on economic diversification, infrastructure, education, healthcare, youth empowerment, and human capital development.
Beyond business and politics, Dr. Gwamna is widely respected for his philanthropic work through the Gombawa Youth Education and Women Empowerment Initiatives, which provides scholarships, vocational training, financial support for small businesses, and empowerment programmes for women and young people.
