Dauda Lawal Dare is a Nigerian banker, politician, and public administrator who has served as the Governor of Zamfara State since May 29, 2023. Before assuming office as governor, he built a distinguished career in Nigeria's banking sector, rising to become Executive Director, Public Sector (North) at First Bank of Nigeria Plc. His transition from banking to public service has made him one of Nigeria's notable leaders with extensive experience in finance, governance, and economic development.
Born on September 2, 1965, in Gusau, Zamfara State, Nigeria, Lawal attended primary and secondary schools in Zamfara before proceeding to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Political Science in 1987. He later earned a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Political Science and International Relations from the same university and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. He has also completed executive education programmes at prestigious institutions, including Harvard Business School, Oxford University Business School, London School of Economics, and Lagos Business School.
Lawal began his professional career in 1989 as a Political Education Officer with the former Agency for Mass Mobilization for Social and Economic Recovery (MAMSER). He later worked as an Assistant General Manager at Westex Nigeria Limited before serving at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, D.C., as an Assistant Consular Officer and subsequently Chief Protocol Officer. In 2003, he joined First Bank of Nigeria Plc, where he held several senior management positions in commercial banking and public sector finance. Through dedication and outstanding performance, he rose to become Executive Director, Public Sector (North), one of the bank's highest executive positions. During his banking career, he received several awards, including the FirstBank CEO Merit Award for Outstanding Performance.
Lawal ventured into politics in 2018 when he contested the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in Zamfara State but was unsuccessful. He later joined the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and secured the party's governorship ticket for the 2023 election. In one of the most notable political upsets of the 2023 general elections, he defeated the incumbent governor, Bello Matawalle, and was sworn in as the Executive Governor of Zamfara State on May 29, 2023.
As governor, Dauda Lawal has pursued a Six-Point Agenda centered on security, agriculture and food security, education, healthcare, economic development, and empowerment. His administration has prioritized restoring peace in communities affected by insecurity, improving infrastructure, strengthening public institutions, enhancing internally generated revenue, and promoting investment to stimulate economic growth across Zamfara State.
Beyond politics, Lawal is recognized for his expertise in banking, financial management, and public administration. His leadership style emphasizes transparency, fiscal discipline, and institutional reforms aimed at improving governance and delivering sustainable development.
