Hon. Cornell Chijioke Onwubuya is a Nigerian politician, administrator and academic from Enugu State. He is from Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area and has built a career spanning local government administration, public service, academia and politics. He is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and is the party’s candidate for the Igbo-Etiti/Uzo-Uwani Federal Constituency in the 2027 House of Representatives election.
Onwubuya has a strong academic background. He obtained a Master’s degree in Development Studies from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 2019 and subsequently enrolled for a PhD programme at the same university. His academic interests have included development and entrepreneurship, and he has also participated in research on entrepreneurial ecosystems and the sustainability of start-up enterprises in Southeast Nigeria.
Before his current political ambition, Onwubuya served as Executive Chairman of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area. He later served in the Enugu State Government as Special Adviser to Governor Sullivan Chime on Investment Promotion and subsequently held a commissioner-level position under the administration of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. He also served as Special Assistant on Special Duties to Governor Ugwuanyi.
In 2026, Onwubuya emerged as the APC consensus candidate for the Igbo-Etiti/Uzo-Uwani Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections. His campaign activities have included engagements with communities and local stakeholders, where he has discussed infrastructure, employment, youth empowerment and community development.
Hon. Cornell Chijioke Onwubuya continues to participate in Enugu State politics, drawing on his previous experience in local government administration, state public service and academic work as he seeks to represent the people of Igbo-Etiti and Uzo-Uwani at the federal level.
