Ahmad Aliyu is a Nigerian politician, public administrator, and accountant who currently serves as the Governor of Sokoto State. He assumed office on 29 May 2023 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Before becoming governor, he served as Deputy Governor of Sokoto State from 2015 to 2018 and held several strategic positions in public administration and finance.
Ahmad Aliyu was born on 1 January 1970 in Tudun Wada area of Sokoto metropolis, Sokoto State, Nigeria. He began his career in the civil service, where he worked as a cashier, auditor, and accountant. Through dedication and professional competence, he rose through the ranks in local government administration. He served as Deputy Director of Finance and Supply in Sabon Birni Local Government between 1996 and 1998, and later became Director of Finance and Supply in Kebbe Local Government. He also served as Chief Accountant of the Local Government Service Commission.
In politics, Ahmad Aliyu became widely known through his association with former Sokoto State Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko. He served as a commissioner in Sokoto State and later emerged as Deputy Governor under Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal in 2015. He resigned from the position in 2018 to pursue his political ambitions.
Ahmad Aliyu contested the 2019 Sokoto State governorship election under the APC but narrowly lost to incumbent Governor Aminu Tambuwal. In the 2023 governorship election, he returned as the APC candidate and won the election with over 453,000 votes, defeating the PDP candidate, Saidu Umar. He was officially sworn in as Governor of Sokoto State on 29 May 2023.
Academically, Ahmad Aliyu possesses strong qualifications in business administration and public finance. He earned a Doctorate Degree in Business Administration from Nasarawa State University in 2023, alongside other academic degrees and professional certifications.
As governor, Ahmad Aliyu has focused on infrastructure development, education, healthcare, agriculture, rural development, and security under his “9-Point Smart Agenda.” His administration has initiated several development projects across Sokoto State aimed at improving the welfare of citizens and strengthening economic growth.
