Agbu Kefas is a Nigerian politician, retired military officer, and the current governor of Taraba State. He assumed office on May 29, 2023, after winning the 2023 governorship election in the state.
Agbu Kefas was born on November 12, 1970, in Wukari, Taraba State, Nigeria. He attended the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, where he obtained a degree in Political Science and Defence Studies in 1994. He later earned a master’s degree in Legal Criminology and Security Psychology from the University of Ibadan and another master’s degree in Public Administration from Delta State University. He also attended executive training programmes at Harvard Kennedy School.
Before entering politics, Agbu Kefas served in the Nigerian Army for over two decades and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. During his military career, he worked in intelligence and security operations, gaining experience in administration and national security matters.
After retiring from the military, Kefas served as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) between 2013 and 2015. He was also a member of the Presidential Committee on the North-East Initiative.
He later joined partisan politics and became Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Taraba State in 2020. In 2022, he emerged as the PDP governorship candidate and won the 2023 Taraba State governorship election.
In 2026, reports indicated that he defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
