About Aliyu Magatakarda Wammako (Sen.)

Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko (born March 1, 1953), popularly known as Alu, is a Nigerian politician and academic, currently serving as Senator for Sokoto North in the 10th National Assembly. He is a leading figure in the APC and a former two-term Governor of Sokoto State.

Wamakko began his career in education and the civil service, rising from classroom teacher to Permanent Secretary, and later served as Chairman of Sokoto Local Government Area. He was Deputy Governor of Sokoto State from 1999 to 2006 before becoming Governor from 2007 to 2015, where he focused on poverty reduction, education expansion, and social welfare.

A Senator since 2015, he now chairs the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts. He is noted for his role in approving major infrastructure financing, strategic political influence in Northern Nigeria, and strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He holds the traditional title of Sarkin Yamman Sokoto and is widely recognized for grassroots engagement and public service contributions.
