Biography of Hon. Basil Okolobaowei Ganagana

Hon. Basil Okolobaowei Ganagana is a Nigerian lawyer and politician from Bulu-Angiama in Patani Local Government Area of Delta State. He was born on October 9, 1966, and has built a political career spanning state-level legislative service, executive appointments, and party politics.

Ganagana began his education at Bulu-Angiama Primary School before attending Government College, Bomadi, and Oproza Grammar School, Patani. He proceeded to Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, where he obtained his first degree in 1994. He later studied Law at Delta State University, Oleh Campus, and became a legal practitioner.

His early involvement in public affairs was through youth leadership. In 1997, he served with the National Youth Council of Nigeria in Patani Chapter and subsequently became Assistant Secretary of the Delta State chapter in 1998. This experience preceded his entry into electoral politics.

In 1999, Ganagana was elected into the Delta State House of Assembly on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), representing his constituency. During his first term, he served as Majority Whip from 1999 to 2000. In 2001, he was elected Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, a position he held until 2003. He was subsequently re-elected to the State Assembly in 2003.

Beyond the legislature, Ganagana has also served in executive positions within the Delta State Government. He was appointed into the state executive structure and has held responsibilities including service as Commissioner for Transport and later Commissioner for Power and Energy.

In 2026, Ganagana emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency in Delta State ahead of the 2027 House of Representatives election. His candidacy marked his return to the national legislative contest after his earlier career in the Delta State House of Assembly.

With a background in law, youth organisation, state legislative leadership and executive administration, Basil Okolobaowei Ganagana remains a prominent political figure from Delta State, particularly within the Bomadi and Patani axis.
