Biography of Senator Barau Jibrin

Senator Barau I. Jibrin, CFR is a Nigerian accountant, businessman, politician, and legislator who represents Kano North Senatorial District in the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and currently serves as the Deputy President of the Senate, the second-highest leadership position in the Nigerian Senate. He has held the position since 13 June 2023.

Senator Barau Jibrin was born on 19 June 1959 in Kabo, Kano State. He received his early education in Kano before pursuing higher education. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, followed by postgraduate qualifications in Financial Management and Pricing, Management, and Business Administration. He also holds a PhD in Corporate Entrepreneurship.

Before entering politics, Barau Jibrin worked in the accounting profession and later ventured into private business. He developed business interests in several sectors, including manufacturing, insurance, construction, and other commercial activities. His experience in accounting and business management later became valuable in his legislative and public-service career.

His political career at the national level began in 1999, when he was elected to the House of Representatives to represent Tarauni Federal Constituency of Kano State. During his time in the House, he served as chairman of important committees, including the Committee on Appropriations and the Committee on Power. He also participated in efforts to improve Nigeria's budgeting and financial management processes.

After leaving the House of Representatives in 2003, Jibrin returned to private business before becoming involved in public administration in Kano State. He served as Chairman of Kano State Investment and Properties Limited and was also appointed Commissioner for Science and Technology in the state.

In 2015, Barau Jibrin was elected to the Senate, representing Kano North Senatorial District under the platform of the APC. He was re-elected in 2019 and again in 2023, giving him three consecutive terms as a senator.

During his senatorial career, he has chaired several important committees. In the 8th Senate, he served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, while in the 9th Senate, he became Chairman of the influential Senate Committee on Appropriations. His accounting background has been particularly relevant to his work on Nigeria's national budget and public expenditure.

On 13 June 2023, following the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly, Barau Jibrin was elected Deputy President of the Senate without opposition. In this position, he assists the Senate President in presiding over proceedings and plays a major role in coordinating legislative activities within the upper chamber.

As Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin has maintained a strong interest in education, agriculture, economic development, youth empowerment, women's empowerment, infrastructure, and national development. His legislative activities have included sponsoring and supporting bills addressing various social, economic, and institutional issues.

By June 2026, he had sponsored 42 bills during the 10th National Assembly, with several advancing through the legislative process. His work has contributed to his reputation as one of the more active legislators in the current Senate.

Senator Barau Jibrin has also received national recognition for his public service. He was conferred with the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in 2022 and later received the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) in 2024.

Beyond his legislative responsibilities, Barau Jibrin has remained involved in initiatives aimed at improving education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and community development in Kano North, which comprises 13 Local Government Areas.

Through his career in accounting, business, public administration, and legislative service, Senator Barau I. Jibrin has established himself as an influential political figure in Kano State and Nigeria. His progression from the private sector to the House of Representatives, Senate, and ultimately the Deputy Presidency of the Senate reflects his long involvement in Nigeria's political and legislative affairs.
