About Aniekan Bassey (Sen.)

Senator Aniekan Etim Bassey is a Nigerian businessman, legislator, and public administrator who represents Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly. He is recognized for his legislative leadership, entrepreneurial background, and commitment to youth empowerment and community development. Before his election to the Senate, he served as Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, where he played a significant role in strengthening legislative governance in the state.

Born on August 30, 1978, in Ekim Enen Village, Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Bassey began his education at Christ the King Nursery and Primary School, Uyo. He attended Uyo High School and later St. Mary's Senior Science College, Abak, before proceeding to the University of Uyo, where he earned degrees in Chemistry and Sociology and Anthropology. He subsequently obtained master's degrees in Social and Cultural Anthropology and Development Studies, and later completed a Ph.D. in Anthropology. He also undertook executive training in leadership and negotiation at institutions including Harvard Law School and Harvard University Extension School.

Before entering politics, Bassey established himself as a successful entrepreneur with business interests in manufacturing, construction, hospitality, security services, and real estate. His ventures created employment opportunities and contributed to economic development within Akwa Ibom State. His experience in business later informed his approach to governance and public policy.

His political career began in 2015, when he was elected to represent Uruan State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). During his tenure in the House, he held several leadership positions, including Chairman of the House Committee on Science and Technology, Chairman of the House Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, Chairman of the House Services Committee, and Deputy Leader. In 2019, he was elected Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, a position he held until 2023. While serving as Speaker, he also became Vice Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Chairman of the South-South Speakers Forum, and an Executive Member of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (Africa Region).

In the 2023 general elections, Senator Bassey was elected to represent Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate. Since assuming office, he has served as Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture Production Services and Rural Development, contributing to legislative efforts aimed at promoting agricultural productivity, rural development, and food security in Nigeria.

Beyond his legislative responsibilities, Senator Bassey is the founder of the RHAB-YESS Foundation, an initiative dedicated to empowering young entrepreneurs, supporting rural women, providing scholarships to indigent students, and delivering humanitarian assistance to vulnerable members of society. Through the foundation, he has promoted education, entrepreneurship, healthcare outreach, and social welfare programmes across Akwa Ibom State.

Throughout his career, Senator Aniekan Bassey has combined entrepreneurship, academic achievement, and legislative leadership in advancing public service.
