Biography of Senator Allwell Onyesoh

Senator Allwell Heacho Onyesoh is a Nigerian politician, educationist, administrator, and public servant from Rivers State. He represents Rivers East Senatorial District in the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He was elected to the Senate in the 2023 general elections under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Allwell Onyesoh was born on 26 December 1960 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He hails from Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State. He attended State School Okomoko/Egwi/Umuanyagu and later Baptist High School, Port Harcourt, where he completed his secondary education.

He proceeded to the University of Jos, where he studied Communication Arts and graduated in 1982. After completing his education, he began a career in teaching and lecturing.

Between 1984 and 1989, Onyesoh worked as a lecturer at the Rivers State School of Basic Studies. He subsequently joined the Rivers State College of Arts and Science, now known as Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, where he continued his academic career and rose to the position of Senior Lecturer.

Onyesoh became involved in politics at a relatively young age. In 1993, he was elected chairman of the National Republican Convention (NRC) in Etche Local Government Area. He later contested for the Etche Constituency II seat in the Rivers State House of Assembly and was elected in 1997 under the United Nigeria Congress Party.

Following the return to democratic politics, Onyesoh became associated with the political movement that supported Peter Odili's governorship campaign in Rivers State. When the Peoples Democratic Party emerged as a major political platform, he became involved in the party's activities.

In 1999, Onyesoh was appointed Commissioner for Education in Rivers State under Governor Peter Odili. He served in that position until 2003, overseeing matters relating to education policy and administration in the state.

He subsequently served as Commissioner for Sports from 2003 to 2007. His responsibilities included sports administration and the development of sporting activities within Rivers State.

In 2011, Onyesoh was appointed Chairman of the Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board. During his tenure, the board was involved in the recruitment of thousands of graduate teachers into the state's secondary-school system.

Onyesoh continued his political activities and remained involved in grassroots organisation and community development in Rivers State. His long experience in education and government administration contributed to his reputation as an experienced political figure.

In the 2023 general elections, Onyesoh contested for the Rivers East Senatorial District seat under the PDP. He won the election and became the first indigene of Etche to represent Rivers East in the Senate.

He was inaugurated as a member of the 10th National Assembly in June 2023. During his time in the Senate, he has participated in legislative debates, committee activities, oversight functions, and discussions on national development.

His legislative interests include education, infrastructure, human-capital development, youth empowerment, healthcare, security, sports, and equitable representation. He has also maintained an interest in constituency development and initiatives designed to improve opportunities for people in Rivers East.

In 2026, Onyesoh continued his political activities in preparation for the 2027 general elections, including efforts toward securing another term representing Rivers East.

Through his career as a lecturer, politician, state commissioner, education administrator, community leader, and senator, Senator Allwell Heacho Onyesoh has established himself as a prominent political figure from Rivers State. His public career has particularly focused on education, sports, youth development, community representation, public administration, and legislative service.
