Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko is a Nigerian politician, administrator, teacher, and public servant from Sokoto State. He represents Sokoto North Senatorial District in the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko was born on 11 November 1953 in Wamakko, Sokoto State. He received his early education in Sokoto before pursuing higher education and professional training.
He studied at the University of Pittsburgh in the United States, where he obtained a degree in Education. He subsequently developed a career in teaching and educational administration before entering full-time politics.
Wamakko began his professional career as an education officer and teacher. He worked in the education sector in Sokoto State and rose through various administrative positions. His experience in education provided him with a strong understanding of public administration and the development of human capital.
His political career became prominent during Nigeria's return to democratic rule in 1999. He served as Deputy Governor of Sokoto State under Governor Attahiru Bafarawa from 1999 to 2006.
In 2007, Wamakko contested for the governorship of Sokoto State under the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP). He later joined the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and contested the governorship election, which he won.
He was sworn in as Governor of Sokoto State on 29 May 2007. During his administration, he focused on education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, water supply, security, and economic development.
Wamakko was re-elected as Governor of Sokoto State in 2011, serving a second term until 29 May 2015. His administration continued to pursue infrastructure projects and social-development programmes across the state.
After leaving office as governor, Wamakko remained active in politics. He became associated with the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the political realignment that preceded the 2015 general elections.
In the 2015 general elections, Wamakko contested for the Sokoto North Senatorial District seat under the APC and won the election. He was subsequently re-elected in 2019 and again in 2023, making him a member of the 8th, 9th, and 10th National Assemblies.
As a senator, Wamakko has participated in legislative debates, committee activities, oversight functions, and policy discussions. He has taken an interest in education, agriculture, infrastructure, security, healthcare, rural development, and economic empowerment.
He has also maintained a strong focus on constituency development. His constituency interventions have included support for education, healthcare, youth empowerment, skills acquisition, infrastructure, and assistance to communities across Sokoto North.
Wamakko has remained an influential political figure in Sokoto State and within the APC. His long experience in government has included service as a teacher, education administrator, deputy governor, governor, and senator.
Beyond his legislative responsibilities, he has continued to engage with traditional leaders, community organisations, political stakeholders, and residents of Sokoto State. His political activities have particularly emphasised grassroots engagement and community development.
