Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Bago is a Nigerian banker, businessman, and politician who has served as the Governor of Niger State since May 29, 2023. Before becoming governor, he represented the Chanchaga Federal Constituency of Niger State in the House of Representatives for three consecutive terms, where he earned recognition for his legislative contributions and advocacy for economic development, infrastructure, and youth empowerment.
Born on February 22, 1974, in Minna, Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago hails from a Nupe family with royal lineage. He began his education at Marafa Primary School, Minna, before attending the Federal Government College, Jos. He later obtained a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Usmanu Danfodiyo University. He further pursued postgraduate studies, earning a Postgraduate Diploma in Management from Federal University of Technology Minna, an MBA from Ambrose Alli University, and a Master's degree in Finance from University of Calabar. He has also completed executive and professional training programmes, including studies at Cambridge University.
Before entering politics, Bago built a successful career in the banking sector, working with leading financial institutions including United Bank for Africa (UBA), First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Standard Trust Bank, and AfriBank. His experience in finance and business management provided a strong foundation for his transition into public service.
His political career began in 2011 when he was elected to represent Chanchaga Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives under the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), which later merged into the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was re-elected in 2015 and 2019, serving three consecutive terms. During his time in the National Assembly, he chaired and served on several key committees, including Banking and Finance, Appropriation, Maritime Safety, Education, and African Cooperation and Integration, while sponsoring numerous bills and motions aimed at national development.
In 2023, Mohammed Umaru Bago won the Niger State governorship election as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and was sworn in as Governor on May 29, 2023. Since assuming office, his administration has prioritized agricultural transformation, infrastructure development, urban renewal, education, healthcare, food security, and investment promotion. His strong emphasis on modern agriculture and large-scale farming initiatives has earned him the popular nickname "The Farmer Governor."
Beyond politics, Bago is known for his philanthropic activities through the Bago Foundation, which supports educational scholarships, youth empowerment programmes, healthcare initiatives, and humanitarian assistance for vulnerable communities across Niger State. His commitment to community development has earned him widespread recognition among his constituents.
